    The palace stands in the village of Estoi, 10km from Faro, the capital of the Algarve.

    Building work on the palace began at the end of the 18th century and it belonged to Fernando José Moreira de Carvalhal; The Viscount of Estoi, José Francisco da Silva, bought it in 1893 then Faro Town Hall bought it in 1987. It joined the best hotels in the world when it became one of the Portugal’s pousadas in 2009.

    In different parts of Romania there are legends on the millenary tradition of the relationship between man and nature, between man and oak tree, considered the king of the forest, through its dimensions or lifespan. Everywhere there are secular oak trees reminiscent of certain historical events, personalities, etc.

    One of the most widespread legends is the one of the oak tree from Borzeşti, Bacau county. In his childhood, mostly spent in Borzeşti, Stephen the future great ruler of Moldavia (1457-1504), organized games with children from his village, the most frequent were battles between the two groups, the Moldovans led by the child Stephen and the Tatars led by his friend, Gheorghiţă.

    In Romania there is a the tradition to plant an oak tree in order to mark different significant moments of the social life.
    This happened in various places in the country with the occasion of the Union of the Romanian Principalities (Moldavia with the capital in Iaşi and the Walachia with the capital in Bucharest) in 1859, the conquest and the proclamation of independence in 1877-1878 or the Great Union in 1918.

    São Brás de Alportel, 15 km from Faro, is the setting for the religious festivals and a place to enjoy all the flavours of Caldeirão. On Easter Sunday, São Brás holds one of the most authentic cultural and religious festivals in the country: the procession in honour of the Resurrected Christ, where parade floats have made way for the flowers that adorn the wonderful torches.

    A strip of land lies between Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Liguria; its name is Lunigiana, a splendid area rich in history and traditions, whose name derives from luna (moon). The medieval Via Francigena passes through this land skirting the Magra River. At every turn you can see traces of an ancient civilization, scattered in this enchanting valley, rich in lush vegetation: the austere profile of innumerable castles, most of which belonged to the aristocratic family of the Malaspina del Ramo Fiorito ( Malaspina means bad thorn so the name itself says a lot about it), ancient walls encircle medieval villages, fortresses, Romanesque churches, Statue-stele, stone idols representing warriors and women with prominent features, standing guard over roads and pastures. They go back to 2000 B.C. and are the mysterious witnesses of this ancient civilization.

    Students at the National School of Landscape Architecture (École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage) in Versailles who have taken part in our trips undergo vocational retraining for 2 years. They wish to become landscape architects/garden designers; we therefore teach them how to use new tools. The logbook is one of these.
