The palace stands in the village of Estoi, 10km from Faro, the capital of the Algarve.

Building work on the palace began at the end of the 18th century and it belonged to Fernando José Moreira de Carvalhal; The Viscount of Estoi, José Francisco da Silva, bought it in 1893 then Faro Town Hall bought it in 1987. It joined the best hotels in the world when it became one of the Portugal’s pousadas in 2009.
