Tuesday 15 January 2013
Version imprimable de cet article Printable version

This olive festival aims to exploit a genuine, high quality product from the area produced by careful and expert growers. The festival began in 1993 as a consequence of the awareness that olive oil could have a great importance for the local economy and as a way of increasing its commercialization.

The festival has grown over the years and has become an important occasion both for tourists and for debate over the economic development of the area. Each year there is a conference regarding the cultivation of olives, new harvesting and pressing techniques, the integrity of the product and the defence against illegal practices in the sector.

The occasion has maintained however the characteristics of a village feast with stands along the main street offering a taste of the newly produced oil. Music and jugglers liven up the afternoon while the town’s restaurants compete in their rediscovery of traditional Tuscan food, accompanied by oil from San Quirico d’Orcia of course! This event which is not to be missed, takes place during the week of the 8th December bank holiday.
